Delve into Yangon’s Diverse Culture & History

Experience the unique fusion of colonial & contemporary influences — including visits to a historic church & a bustling market — in the Garden City of the East. Plus, attend an evening candle lighting at a world-renowned ancient pagoda.

About Your Trip

Discover the heart of Yangon, a city full of history and natural beauty where you’ll visit some of the region’s most heralded sites on this adventurous DreamTrip. Your guided tour begins at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, the largest church in the country, boasting a striking exterior of twin bell towers and gothic-style features and an interior of stained-glass windows and dramatic arches. Continue your cultural discovery with a visit to colonial-era buildings, such as Yangon City Hall. At Independence Monument, marvel at this 165-foot (50-meter) obelisk. Wander through the Bogyoke Aung San Market (also known as Scott Market), a busy bazaar with more than 2,000 shops. Once night falls, head to Shwedagon Pagoda that was built more than 2,500 years ago and is completely covered in gold. Under the light of thousands of candles— you can light some of them yourself! — it mesmerizes with a picture-perfect enchanting ambience.

During leisure time, why not explore more of Yangon and the surrounding area at your own pace? At Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda, admire the revered 213-foot-long (65-meter-long) reclining Buddha statue. Take to the busy pedestrian street Anawrahta Road and you will notice wandering monks, rich colonial architecture, bustling markets and street food vendors. Or, you can ride the Circle Line train to see the city, meet locals and watch vendors hop on and off to sell their goods.

What we love:
• The city’s downtown is known for stunning colonial-era architecture that has been preserved by heritage groups — no skyscrapers here!
• To say the enormous Shwedagon Pagoda is magnificent is an understatement — the shrine is covered in over 59,000 pounds (26,000 kilograms) of gold leaf. And the top of the stupa is encrusted with more than 4,000 diamonds.
• Traditional dress in Yangon includes sarong-like garments for both men and women, and visitors to religious sites are encouraged to cover their shoulders and knees.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

This trip will close by January 5.

Destination

Yangon — called Rangoon during the British colonial era — was the longtime capital of Myanmar until the mid-2000s. It’s still the country’s largest city, not to mention Southwest Asia's major commercial hub. Thanks to milestone elections in 2012 that resulted in extensive political changes, the borders were opened to foreign travelers. A fascinating place to explore the many different faces of modern-day Myanmar, Yangon is home to an abundance of historical landmarks.

The city reflects its ethnic influences — British, Chinese and Indian among them — yet most of the population practices Buddhism, with pagodas and monasteries dotting the scenery. Visitors to Yangon are delighted by the range of cuisine, from samosas and curry to tea-leaf salad and fish rice.
